Cannabis Packaging Design · Built for shelf and compliance

Cannabis Branding
Agency.

Cannabis shelves are a knife fight. A great brand wins shelf and earns the price premium. A weak one disappears into the lavender-and-green sameness everyone else defaulted to. We build cannabis brand identity and packaging that actually stands out — and clears compliance review on the first submission.

What cannabis branding actually delivers

A brand that earns shelf, not one that begs for it.

Cannabis branding is the difference between a brand budtenders recommend and a SKU that quietly gets rotated off the menu. The visual system carries the strategy — not the other way around. Here’s what a cannabis branding and packaging engagement from a cannabis marketing agency delivers.

→ Outcome 01

A brand that stands out at the dispensary.

Most cannabis packaging looks the same: leaf, lavender, lowercase wordmark, generic strain naming. We design identity systems built to be the one customers point to from across the store.

→ Outcome 02

Packaging that passes compliance the first time.

Cannabis packaging design lives or dies on jurisdictional regulation: warning placement, font size, child-resistance, THC labeling. We architect for the rules of every state you ship to.

→ Outcome 03

A brand system that scales across SKUs and channels.

Flower, edibles, vapes, concentrates — plus social, web, retail, and out-of-home. A real cannabis brand identity holds up across every surface. We design the system, not just the logo.

The engagement

Four phases. No mystery.

You’ll always know where we are, what’s next, and why. Cannabis branding has more stakeholders than most projects — founders, compliance, printers, retailers. We run a process that absorbs that.

01
Week 1–3

Strategy

Discovery, audience interviews, competitive teardown, positioning, naming, narrative. The brief that everything else flows from.

02
Week 3–6

Identity

Logo concepts → identity system → brand guidelines. Two rounds of revision. Stakeholder sign-off before packaging starts.

03
Week 6–12

Packaging

Packaging design for every SKU, dieline production, compliance review, print proofing. We handle the printer handoff.

04
Week 12+

Rollout

Web, social, sales collateral, retail merchandising. Cannabis brand systems live in the wild after launch — we set the rollout up so it scales.

“Trip designed our cannabis packaging system and we won shelf in three new chains in the next quarter. Budtenders started recommending the brand by name. That had never happened before.”

Why Trip

The cannabis-specialist difference.

A generalist brand agency taking on cannabis packaging has never read a state compliance doc. A specialist agency designs around them in their sleep.

Generalist marketing agency

The agency that “also does cannabis”

  • Designs packaging that fails compliance review on submission
  • Doesn’t know which warning labels apply in which states
  • Treats compliance as a constraint to work around at the end
  • Reuses CPG identity systems built for unregulated categories
  • No relationships with cannabis-aware print and packaging vendors
  • Stops at the logo, leaving the packaging system unbuilt
  • Junior designers running brand strategy work
Trip · Cannabis specialists

Common questions

Before the call.

The questions every cannabis operator asks us first. Still have one? Just ask on the form below.

How long does cannabis branding and packaging take?
Most cannabis branding engagements run 10–14 weeks end to end — two to three weeks of strategy, three to four weeks of identity design, four to six weeks of packaging, plus rollout. Smaller projects (logo and a single SKU) can ship in 6–8 weeks. Full multi-SKU rebrands for established operators can run 16+.
Do you handle compliance review on cannabis packaging?
Yes — baked in. We design to the current packaging regulations of every state you ship to: warning label placement, font size requirements, child-resistance certification, THC content disclosure, and seed-to-sale tracking integration. Compliance review happens during design, not after submission.
Can you design packaging for flower, edibles, vapes, and concentrates?
Yes — all of them. Each format has its own constraints (rigid vs. flexible, child-resistant requirements, dosage labeling, tamper-evident features) and we’ve shipped systems across every cannabis product category.
Do you do brand naming too?
Yes. Cannabis naming is part of brand strategy — we’ll generate, screen for trademark conflicts, check state registrations, and pressure-test names with target audiences before recommending. Plus subname strategy (product lines, strain families, sub-brands) for operators with portfolios.
Will you work with our existing brand or only do full rebuilds?
Both. We do refreshes (evolution rather than revolution), partial rebuilds (new packaging on existing brand), and full rebrands. Some cannabis operators come to us with a brand that’s 80% there and just needs the packaging system extended — that’s a fine engagement.
Do you connect us with cannabis-aware printers and packaging vendors?
Yes — one of the most valuable parts of working with a cannabis branding agency that’s been in the space for a decade. We have working relationships with printers who understand cannabis SOPs, child-resistant packaging suppliers, and finishing partners who can spec what you need.
How much does cannabis branding cost?
Project pricing varies based on scope. A logo-only engagement is in the low five-figures. A full identity + packaging system across multiple SKUs is mid to high five-figures. A complete cannabis brand build (strategy, naming, identity, packaging, rollout) for a multi-product operator can run into six figures. Book a strategy call and we’ll scope it transparently.
Can you help with rollout after the design is done?
Yes — web, social, sales collateral, in-dispensary signage, sales decks, line sheets. Cannabis brands die in the gap between “design delivered” and “design used.” We close that gap with rollout support.
